No DM Client at release

Post by Tunari » Thu May 11, 2006 2:46 pm

ah oh..

This was posted by Kalia D at NWC.

There was a lot of speculation about a misquote yesterday about no DM client being released initially but it has been confirmed to indeed be the truth.

Patrick Mills:The Sony rep was quoting me, I think, and neither he nor I misspoke. The DM Client will very likely not ship with the game. There just isn't enough time to finish, test, and polish it before launch and we don't want to ship something that sucks.

We do have plans to release one, but I don't know when it will be available.

This is both good and bad:

Good:
Allows people to play the OC without being distracted with building.
Allows builders/scripters to get used to the toolset
Allows builders/scripters to make mods without rushing

Bad:
Hurts PWs that are not based on static quests
Hurts campaign style play

So...thoughts?

Hmm, now I have to decide whether I buy this game from the get go or not. It would have been a no-brainer before. Now, with this news, it will depend on whether I've gotten through my backlog of other games I'm still finishing (Jade Empire, BG2 believe it or not, and probably Oblivion by then). NWN2 would have jumped to the front of the list but for this news.

I might even be less concerned about the DM client news, than I am about Obsidian's future ability to support the game. Bioware has been amazing in that regard, and this news, couple with the unfinished nature of KOTOR 2, really has me worried. Yes, I know that the publisher I guess is technically responsible, but I can't imagine Bioware doing something like this. Bioware constantly referred to the "spirit" of NWN being the ability to sit down, like in pen and paper, and play with your friends. That seems to be kicked to the curb in favor of another single player game. I can only hope that the DM client really does come out at some point after release. Whew, I can really see the gaming press give Atari/Oblivion a beating over this one. This is an entire component of the game that has been removed.

Gonna post this in the official forums too.

Well, still a few months out. So, hopefully by then we'll know when they will release the Dm client. Than we'd know how long it would be.

If a month or so later, not bad right? It is gonna take some time to build something you'd want to dm anyway. Course, not knowing what the new DM client can and can't do, how it works etc.. would be a bit unnerving.

We'll see, hopefully hear some good news about the client in the next few months.

Hopefully, this is much ado about nothing (check out Maximus' message on NW Vault), but I have no faith with Atari's current financial state that they will fund a DM client after release. I'm not saying they won't, but I mean that I certainly won't assume it is a done deal, unless it is shipped with the game.

Someone in the forums said the posts there sounded like the different stages of grief. I guess I'm in the "pissed off" stage right now. I keep telling myself, "it's only a game . . . it's only a game . . . "

Pasting this from Bio Forums. Feargus posted a couple times. Not bad I guess if the guy is at E3 in L.A and still went in and posted a couple times after catching wind of the communities concerns, right?

1st post:

On the subject of the DM client I did want to say a couple of things:

1) We at Obsidian know the importance of the DM client as it relates to the running of PWs. We want PWs to exist for NWN2, so we need to support the DM client.

2) We are going to be talking over the next couple of weeks to see what we will have at launch and when we will have a more final roadmap when it comes to the complete DM Client.

I do apologize for this being the way the information got to all of you about the DM Client, it's not what we intended. I was planning to have us make an announcement in the next few weeks about it, after we had gotten some more of our planning done.

2nd post:
Not to repeat what I said in the other topic about this, but I did want to say here that we understand the necessity and the need for a DM Client. However, as of tonight, we do not have a specific plan as to what of the DM Client we can provide in the box at ship and what will be provided as a patch.

To be clear, since things can be interpreted many different ways, there will be a DM Client for NWN2. We want it to have all the functionality as the current NWN1. I say want in that sentance, because I'm at E3, it's almost 11pm and I hadn't planned on talking about it today.

We are going to be putting plans together in the next couple of weeks having to do with the DM Client. When we have those plans we will explain them in detail to everyone. Please don't think that means one of the plans is that there will be no DM Client - it doesn't mean that at all.

All that I can ask at this point is to please bear with us.

Well, I am sure I'll still get it, not being a dm running games though, just my player perspective. I enjoy the SPs, also I do want to see the toolset. Though I only have only built a couple very basic mods with the current toolset, who knows..it could be inspiring and I'll build away. :D

Mods can still be built for SP or non DM'd Multi player fun, like when we ran the slaver mod, or a couple summers ago when V hosted and played the weekend series mods with some of us. Now, I know we still had to have V log in on occassion to fix things before continuing, but there could be some temporary ways around that also right? Through use of widgets/tools etc.. One of the characters could have some special items on him to give gold, or give levels, transport players etc..?

There will be some builders making mods right off the bat I am sure. And I'll be excited to see what that new toolset can do in capable hands, not mine. lol

Anyway, there is a new thread at Bio that the Devs are reading for thoughts on what you'd like to see IN the new DM Client when they do make it/finish it.
